Unlocking the Future of Authentication with FIDO Passkeys

Unlocking the Future of Authentication with FIDO Passkeys

Imagine confidently logging into your business systems, knowing that your authentication method is virtually impenetrable. This is the promise of FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Passkeys—a cutting-edge solution designed to eliminate the vulnerabilities of traditional password-based systems. At Nomerel, we specialize in empowering businesses in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area and beyond to leverage advanced technologies like FIDO Passkeys, creating a more secure and seamless digital experience.

What Are FIDO Passkeys?

A FIDO Passkey is a secure, password-less authentication method based on public-key cryptography, designed to make logging into websites and applications more secure and user-friendly. It is part of the FIDO2 standard, developed by the FIDO Alliance (Fast Identity Online), which aims to reduce reliance on traditional passwords.

How FIDO Passkeys Work

Two Keys:

  • Private Key: Stored securely on your device (e.g., your phone, computer, or a hardware security key). It is never shared with the website or app.
  • Public Key: Shared with the website or app during registration. This key is used to verify the private key without exposing it.

Authentication:

  • When you log in, the website or app sends a challenge (a random piece of data) to your device.
  • Your device uses the private key to sign this challenge and returns the signed response.
  • The website or app uses the stored public key to verify the signed response, ensuring it matches and proves your identity.

Biometric or PIN:

  • To use the private key, you authenticate yourself on your device with a biometric method (like a fingerprint or face scan) or a PIN. This step ensures that even if someone gets physical access to your device, they can’t use your credentials without your permission. This cryptographic process ensures that even if a malicious actor intercepts the data, it cannot be reused, decrypted, or exploited in any meaningful way.

Unlike traditional passwords, which can be guessed, stolen, or reused across platforms, FIDO Passkeys rely on advanced encryption techniques that make such attacks nearly impossible. At Nomerel, we guide businesses through every step of implementing this transformative technology, customizing solutions to align seamlessly with their security and operational goals.

Why FIDO Passkeys Matter

In today’s digital landscape, a robust authentication strategy is essential for businesses aiming to stay secure and competitive. FIDO Passkeys offer numerous advantages over traditional methods, including:

Enhanced Security

By eliminating passwords, FIDO Passkeys address vulnerabilities such as phishing, credential stuffing, and password database breaches. The requirement for physical possession ensures an added layer of protection, as authentication cannot occur without the user’s presence.

Improved User Experience

Forget juggling complex passwords. With FIDO Passkeys, users simply pair a Bluetooth token or use biometric authentication to log in. This frictionless process boosts productivity and reduces frustration, making it a win-win for businesses and their teams.

Proactive Risk Mitigation

FIDO Passkeys use public key cryptography to sign cryptographic challenges, ensuring authentication requests come from legitimate sources. This method provides strong phishing protection and bolsters defenses against evolving cyber threats, ensuring long-term resilience.

Privacy Protection

FIDO Passkeys do not rely on sharing personal data, such as usernames or passwords, with online services. By reducing the amount of personal information exposed to potential breaches, businesses can offer enhanced privacy protection to users.

Cross-Platform Compatibility

Designed to work seamlessly across websites, mobile apps, and desktop platforms, FIDO Passkeys offer a versatile and scalable authentication solution suitable for both individual users and enterprises.

In today’s fast-evolving technological landscape, a well-structured IT plan is not just a luxury—it is a necessity for businesses striving to stay competitive. Why a Tech Plan Matters

A robust IT strategy is a vital component of a well-executed business plan. It provides your organization with direction and focus, enabling you to make informed decisions about how and where to allocate resources. A strong tech plan is not just about keeping up with technological advancements – it is about leveraging them to create a competitive edge and ensure operational efficiency.  The advantages of a well-defined tech plan include:

    1. Alignment with Business Goals

Your IT strategy should directly support and drive your broader organizational objectives, ensuring that each investment serves a clear business purpose. This alignment allows your business to innovate strategically and achieve measurable outcomes.

    2. Proactive Resource Allocation

Anticipating future needs and opportunities allows for more effective use of resources. By identifying potential challenges and emerging trends, your business can reduce the likelihood of unplanned costs and optimize your IT investments.

    3. Informed Decision-Making

A strategic plan gives you clear priorities and actionable insights, empowering smarter choices when it comes to technology investments.  This approach minimizes risks while ensuring that your IT strategy evolves alongside business demands.

Nomerel focuses on these four critical areas when crafting your IT budget and roadmap:

    1. Routine IT Services

Routine maintenance is essential for ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining productivity. Regular monitoring of your infrastructure can also help protect against emerging cyber threats. Solutions like vulnerability scanning and network monitoring are crucial for safeguarding your data and systems.

    2. IT Projects

Consider initiatives that will help expand your capabilities, such as upgrading outdated hardware, adopting innovative software, or improving your cybersecurity posture. These one-time investments can have long-lasting benefits for your operations.

    3. Technology Refreshes

While sticking with legacy systems may save money in the short term, outdated technology can lead to inefficiencies, increased security risks, and compliance issues. Regular technology refresh cycles ensure that your systems remain secure, efficient, and competitive.

    4. Incident Preparedness

Given the rising frequency of cyberattacks and data breaches, it is essential to prepare for unexpected incidents. Strengthen your incident response plans and cybersecurity infrastructure to minimize potential disruptions, including proactive measures against ransomware and other threats.

Avoid Holiday Scams: How to Shop Safely Online This Season

Avoid Holiday Scams: How to Shop Safely Online This Season

The holiday season is a time for joy, giving—and a lot of online shopping. Unfortunately, it’s also prime time for cybercriminals to prey on unsuspecting shoppers.  With the rise of AI and technologic advancements, online shopping holiday scams are more prevalent now than ever before.

Picture this.  You are scrolling on Facebook and see an ad from your favorite furniture company for 80% off a coffee table that you’ve had your eye on.  The deal seems too good to be true, but you click into the ad to find out more.  After scrolling for a minute, you realize the website looks different from the original company’s site.  In addition, the web address has a slight variation that was not noticeable at first.  You decide to not purchase anything as this site seems to be a scam – and you would be right.

You may wonder why a scammer would go through the immense effort of creating a false site that appears to be legitimate.  Oftentimes, scam artists do this to lure you into creating an account with a password that you have used before.  Once they have access to this password, they can hack into any other account that you have created with this email and password combination.  This is why we, at Nomerel, will always encourage you to use a new password for every account.  To make things easier, you can use a password manager such as 1Password or Bitwarden to autofill your passwords and keep everything in one place.  If you’re interested in learning more, feel free to contact our team and we will help set you up for optimum online security.

As your seasonal shopping increases, help decrease your stress levels by following these online safety tips.

    1. Beware of “Too Good to Be True” Deals

As mentioned above, scammers often use fake websites with absurdly low prices to steal your personal and financial information.  Instead of clicking on the link, do some research first by looking up the website from a secure browser.  Look for misspellings, check reviews, and verify return policies to confirm legitimacy of the site and deal.

    2. Avoid “Free Gift” Holiday Scams

Be wary of offers claiming “just pay shipping” for a gift.  Scammers use these tactics to gather your information and send cheap items often at the expense of stealing your information. Only shop on secure websites that use “https,” in the web address as the “s” indicates that the site is secure.

    3. Shop on Trusted Platforms

Scams are often bred on an unknown website.  If you have never heard of the site before, do some research before inputting any information.  Check for security indicators, like a padlock icon and a valid SSL certificate. If you use a Google Chrome browser, you can click on the top left icon (shown below) to check if the site is secure and then click “about this page” to read more details.

    4. Strengthen Your Account Security

Protect your online shopping accounts by enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) and using unique, complex passwords.  At Nomerel, we strongly recommend having different passwords for every account.  This ensures that even if one of your login credentials is compromised, your other online accounts remain secure.

    5. Pause Before You Purchase

Flash sales and countdown timers are designed to create urgency, but don’t let them rush you. Take a moment to consider whether the deal is legitimate. If anything seems suspicious, trust your instincts and steer clear.

    6. Monitor Your Financial Activity

Check your bank statements regularly to spot unauthorized charges early.  Use credit cards for online shopping instead of debit cards; they often come with better protection from online scams.

    7. Educate Yourself and Share Awareness

Stay informed about evolving scams and share tips with friends and family to help them avoid holiday fraud. A little knowledge goes a long way in keeping everyone safe.

This holiday season don’t let cybercriminals ruin your festive spirit. A few moments of caution can save you from financial and emotional stress.

Key Steps for Successful Business Continuity Planning

Key Steps for Successful Business Continuity Planning

Imagine managing a bustling healthcare clinic where patients rely on timely access to care and critical medical information. The day is running smoothly until, suddenly, a power outage disrupts access to patient records, or worse, a cyberattack compromises sensitive data, leaving both staff and patients in confusion. Operations grind to a halt, appointments are delayed, and patient care is impacted. It’s a stressful scenario, but with a well-prepared Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and our dedicated team at Nomerel by your side, your clinic can stay resilient and keep things moving, even during unexpected crises.

Unexpected chaos can strike any business at any time. One moment, you’re basking in the glory of running a successful establishment; the next, you’re thrown against a wall, staring at a crisis that could disrupt your entire business. Don’t let this be your story.

At Nomerel, we specialize in helping businesses prepare for the unexpected. In this blog, we’ll share key steps to create a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) that works for you and ensures your business stays up and running, even in the face of disaster.

Key Steps for Successful Business Continuity Planning

Here’s how you can stay resilient, no matter what challenges come your way:

    1. Identify and Prioritize What’s Most Important for Your Business

Every business has vital functions that must continue, no matter the situation. The first step in building a solid BCP is identifying these business-critical resources, a process Nomerel specializes in. Once you’ve figured that out, try to understand how sudden disruptions can affect these functions.

For instance, if you run a retail store, your point-of-sale systems and inventory management would be business-critical. Any disruptions to these could result in lost sales or poor customer experience. At Nomerel, we help businesses pinpoint these key functions, so they can keep things running smoothly—even during a disruption.

    2. Develop a Comprehensive Plan

It’s not enough to just know what’s important—you also need a clear, step-by-step plan to minimize downtime. Nomerel collaborates with businesses to design these detailed, actionable plans, assigning roles and responsibilities so everyone knows their part when a disruption occurs.

For example, if your primary server goes down, your IT team should be ready to switch to a backup server, while your customer service team handles client communication. Our team at Nomerel ensures plans are easy to follow, providing a fast and organized response.

    3. Use the Latest Technology to Protect Your Data

One of the biggest threats to business continuity is data loss. That’s why leveraging the modern technology that Nomerel offers our clients, like cloud backups and failover systems, is crucial. These tools ensure that even if your systems go down, your data remains secure and accessible.

For instance, a law firm might use cloud storage to back up client files regularly, so even in the event of a cyberattack, the data is retrievable when needed. At Nomerel, we help businesses implement these critical technologies to ensure their operations stay secure and efficient.

    4. Train Your Team and Test the Plan

Even the best continuity plan won’t work if your team isn’t ready to implement it. Regular training and testing with your staff and Nomerel’s expertise ensures that everyone knows their role and can act quickly in an emergency. Running mock scenarios also helps you spot potential weaknesses and make improvements.

For example, a healthcare provider might simulate a system outage to ensure staff know how to access patient records through backup systems. Nomerel works with businesses to create and lead training and testing, ensuring your team is prepared when it matters most.

    5. Involve Key Stakeholders

Your business continuity plan should involve input from your key team members. Gathering feedback from managers, IT personnel, and other critical staff ensures that your plan is both practical and comprehensive.

For example, your accounting team might have unique concerns about maintaining access to financial data during an outage. Our dedicated team at Nomerel helps businesses involve all relevant stakeholders in the planning process, so no detail is overlooked.

    6. Monitor and Improve Continuously

Business continuity is an ongoing process, and your plan should evolve as your business grows or as new threats emerge. After a disruption, gather feedback collaborate with us at Nomerel to strengthen your continuity strategies.

For instance, after a network outage, you might implement additional failover systems or improve customer communication protocols. At Nomerel, we work with businesses to regularly review and update their plans, ensuring they stay ready for whatever comes next.
